Back Home In Indiana on The Pete Dye Golf Trail The late, great hall-of-fame golf course architect Pete Dye was one of the finest golf course architects of his generation. Dye’s ‘footprint’ on golf is prolific. It’s on display around the world, especially in Indiana. To honor Dye’s ties to Indiana, The Pete Dye Golf Trail is comprised of seven of Dye’s creations: The Pete Dye Course at French Lick, Brickyard Crossing Golf Club, The Fort Golf Course, Maple Creek Golf & Country Club, Tippecanoe Country Club, plus the Ackerman-Allen and Kampen golf courses at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The Pete Dye Course at French Lick The Pete Dye Course at French Lick opened in 2009. It includes three man-made lakes and was built atop a high ridge. The elevation changes and views alone make this a must play. Powerful adjectives like, dramatic, exciting and spectacular have been used to describe The Pete Dye Course experience. From the clubhouse high atop Mt. Airie, Indiana’s second highest elevation point, you get a 360-degree view of southern Indiana and the surrounding Hoosier National Forest. It is possible to take in the vistas for 30-40 miles in every direction. “As I built the golf course, I tried to get the tees, the fairways, and the greens in position that they have these long views over the valleys and hills,” stated Dye. By Mike May Indiana Golf Journal

Brickyard Crossing Golf at Brickyard Crossing is a blend of golf and motor sports as the course sits adjacent to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Dye redesigned the Brickyard Crossing Golf Club with 14 holes situated on the outskirts of the Speedway and four holes located within the infield of the Racing Capital of the World. The infield holes are accessible via a tunnel, under the actual racetrack. All pins have black-and-white checkered flags with the logo of the IMS sewn across the flag. So, when you play Brickyard Crossing, you get 18 checkered-flag experiences. The Fort Golf Course The Fort Golf Course is one of the finest public golf courses in the Midwest. In fact, on the home page of this golf course’s website, it’s stated that The Fort Golf Course is one of the “best golf courses you can play in Indiana.” “Our course is surrounded by the Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park, so there are no residential homes on the course,” said John Swan, head golf professional at The Fort. Golf has been played here since the early 1950s by U.S. Army personnel. The golf course was originally called the Fort Harrison Officers Club and Golf Course. Things changed for the better in 1998 after the re-design by Pete Dye and Tim Liddy. Located 25 minutes from downtown Indianapolis, The Fort has three on-site housing options, Fort Harrison State Park Inn, Harrison House, and Officer’s Home.

Purdue University is blessed with two great, nationally respected Pete Dye golf courses, AckermanAllen and Kampen, which are located at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. Ackerman-Allen is a parkland-style course with rolling hills, tree-lined fairways, white sand bunkers, and wide collection areas around the greens. Kampen is a links-style layout with vast sand bunkers, well-placed waste bunkers, man-made wetlands, and a natural celery bog. “As for Ackerman-Allen, Pete Dye took an already good golf course and turned it into an incredibly fun and truly enjoyable golf course,” said head golf professional Daniel Ross. “Kampen has always been a strong golf course. Now, the course is in great condition and the greens are very consistent. Both courses are kept in phenomenal shape.” Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex Indiana Golf Journal

The Maple Creek Golf & Country Club The Maple Creek Golf and Country Club, located on the northeast side of Indianapolis, was Dye’s first 18-hole golf-course design. Originally opened as Heather Hills Golf and Country Club in 1961, this 18-hole layout was created in partnership with his wife, Alice. Today, Maple Creek features small tees and greens, narrow fairways lined with mature trees and natural long grass areas with a creek winding through the front nine. “Maple Creek is a picturesque, traditional and classical setting defined by challenging yet rewarding design features,” said Jim Grossi, Maple Creek’s General Manager and Head Golf Professional Tippecanoe Country Club The Tippecanoe Country Club in Monticello is one of the most treasured attractions in northern Indiana. It opened for play in 1920, as a nine-hole golf course. The most significant change to the golf course took place in 1963 when a young Pete Dye was hired to add an additional nine holes to the existing golf course. He designed the back nine and re-designed portions of the front nine, including all the tees and greens. His work remains as relevant today as it was back in the early 1960s. Indiana is proud of its adopted-son, Pete Dye. He has left a legacy of great golf for all golfers to enjoy. Find out more about the Pete Dye Golf Trail at: https://www.petedyegolftrail.com/.

KINONA’s Fall Collection Is Sure To Please Women Golfers By Belinda Theoret In 2017, KINONA, the trendy women’s golf apparel line, was founded by Dianne Celuch and Tami Fujii, a pair of friends, who are now corporate executives-turned-entrepreneurs. Simply put, KINONA golf apparel makes women look good and feel good. When that happens, women tend to have more fun on the golf course. KINONA’s fun, course-tested styles are crafted from Italian fabrics and feature sun protection. The apparel also has subtle features like tee holders and back pockets, which allows ladies to bring a chic, contemporary, and functional fashion to the fairway. When you’re wearing KINONA apparel, you’re part of the wave that is shifting the paradigm in women’s golf apparel. What has always set KINONA apart from other women’s golf apparel companies is the fabric they use. The Italian fabrics used are a combination of ECONYL high-quality regenerated nylon and lycra, which give ladies terrific fit, feel, and performance. Other design innovations -- such as higher waistbands and princess seam lines that accentuate a lady’s shape -- have been built into all of its products. Leg warmers have also become a staple in women’s golf apparel and KINONA’s Sun’s Out Thigh Highs are a great idea because they are multi-purpose. Firstly, these leg warmers have UPF 50+ sun protection that keeps the sun’s harmful rays at bay. Secondly, they’ll keep you warm on those chilly mornings. Unlike full-length leggings, they’re easy to get on and off thanks to the zippers at the bottoms which means you don’t even have to take off your golf shoes. The fact that they look fantastic and are super comfortable thanks to the no-slip grippers at the top of the legs only adds to their value. The Sun’s Out Thigh Highs are available in several colors including navy blue, black, and white. Are you looking for something a little less traditional? The new Tailored Track Golf Pant is sewn from KINONA’s unique new stretch woven fabric, and this trouser-style women’s golf pant is long enough to cover most ankles. The Track Golf Indiana Golf Journal

Pant transitions easily from the golf course to a business meeting without you missing a beat. The zipped pockets keep valuables secure and in place. The new tailored look may just make this your new go-to pant. The Tailored Track Golf Pant is available in navy blue, black, black/chartreuse yellow, blueberry blue, and several other colors and prints. Whether you’re looking to keep the sun at bay or just want something a little warmer up top, KINONA’s Keep It Covered Longsleeve Golf Top is a great transitional piece to wear. The fabric is lighter than its other top fabrics and can easily be worn under a jacket or a vest. But just because the fabric is lighter doesn’t mean it lacks function! Like KINONA’s other great tops, the Keep It Covered Longsleeve Golf Top wicks away moisture, keeps you smelling fresh, and is easy to wash-and-wear. The quarter zip neckline is versatile and can be zipped up or worn open. The Keep It Covered Longsleeve Golf Top is available in a wide range of colors including Hidden-in-Site orange, navy blue, white, black, raspberry red, ombre print, and foulard. KINONA’s latest collections also feature apparel that stretches, compresses, and conceals in just the right places to flatter all figures. To see more, visit www.kinonasport.com.

PGA Tour Superstore (PGATSS), the largest golf-specific retailer in the U.S., continues to have record sales while expanding the number of locations, and says clubs, apparel, and accessories specifically for women are an important focus to fuel additional growth. In an exclusive interview with PGATSS CEO and President Dick Sullivan, he described how the company is working to erase the traditional malecentric approach to golf retailing with an ongoing program to create a woman-friendly experience Women Are The Focus at PGA Tour Superstore By Ed Travis in their stores. This initiative is already producing impressive results. To illustrate, Sullivan related that at the grand opening of a new store in Fairfax, Virginia, last August, they saw more women’s apparel being sold than men’s, a complete reversal of the usual pattern. Consumers respond to retailers with a large stock of aggressively priced inventory, plus friendly and knowledgeable salespeople. This of course applies Indiana Golf Journal

to golf, especially when targeting women golfers, many of whom are looking for help purchasing equipment, plus they are demanding functional, yet stylish apparel. Golfers of both sexes are drawn to PGATSS’s size with locations up to 50,000 square feet with multiple hitting bays, computer simulators for lessons or practice, adequate inventory of equipment, shoes, clothing and anything needed to improve enjoyment of the game. As the pandemic changed everyone’s life, golf quickly became the perfect antidote for cabinfever as an outdoor activity, in which the entire family could participate. The number of golfers and number of rounds saw a dramatic rise of roughly 3 million in 2020 and the National Golf Foundation is forecasting the number to be higher in 2021. A major part of this increase was due to women finding the game fun and recent data shows about 40% of new participants on and off course are women. According to Sullivan, “Thirty four percent of the new women golfers are under 18 years of age, and we plan to encourage them with more in-store events, such as clinics. Women’s golf apparel has become a reflection of their lifestyle. Women are shopping for and choosing functional apparel for a more relaxed wardrobe.” In addition to golf, fitness and wellness spending is exploding. Wardrobes are more casual and leisure attire is more acceptable on and off the course. PGATSS is a sponsor of “Get Golf Ready” a series of six one-hour group sessions for novice women golfers. The goal is to make women more comfortable with golf jargon, etiquette, and rules. Participants are taught the basic swing and clubs are provided, if necessary. PGATSS is the official retailer of the nationwide Women’sGolfDay anda sponsor of other programs introducing women to the game. Showing the across-the-board commitment is a slogan the company often uses, “Girls Got Drive.” Additional support is also provided to several other organizations dedicated to bringing more women into the game including “SheWho Golfs,” “Fore the Ladies,” and “Women on Course”. Sullivan was candid about the company’s struggle during the pandemic. “All our stores were closed for 54 days during the Covid pandemic, but every vendor was paid on time and not a single employee was furloughed.” Inventory and supply chain concerns were an issue in 2021, leading to some items being in short supply. “Push carts and package club sets for women and juniors were going out the door as soon as they came in.” At times, extraordinary efforts were called for to meet customer demand. Sullivan told of taking delivery of several thousand wedges without grips to speed up deliver. Making lemonade from lemons, PGATSS due to the lack of a stock grip meant that each wedge’s grip could be customized for the individual golfer.

Speaking of the bounce back from being hit with the problems from closure and inventory supply Sullivan said, “We were able to have a rapid recovery, quick pick up and there was no slow down going into 2021.” Addressing the future of PGATSS Sullivan related, “We did as much business in the first half of 2021 as all of 2019, which was a record year and projections for 2021 have been increased 20 percent.” PGATSS continues to grow, by the start of 2022 there will be 50 stores nationwide with plans to add as many as 10 each year. A National Hiring Day was held in early November to find the new employees required to adequately staff each location. Sullivan closed our interview with, “We are most proud of overcoming traditional barriers in golf retail, while keeping our culture and attitude to be customer friendly.” Indiana Golf Journal

By Mike May Question: Where in the U.S. can you find ten miles of marvelous oceanside beaches, kayak tours, bicycle rides, bird watching, tennis, paddle boarding, horseback riding, fishing, boating, canoeing, croquet, world-class accommodations, plus 63 holes of golf? Answer: Jekyll Island, on the Georgia coastline. “Jekyll Island is one of the best places in the U.S. where you can go to unwind and relax while enjoying golf, fresh seafood, long walks along the beach, poolside siestas, and time off the grid,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, the Georgia Golf Trail. “For golfers, the 63-hole Jekyll Island Golf Club features four courses at one location which makes it one of the most popular getaways on the Georgia Golf Trail. For golfers, Jekyll Island is one of Georgia’s most popular stay-andplay destinations.” When it comes to the ‘stay’ part of your Jekyll Island adventure, there are three great overnight options -- The Westin Jekyll Island, the Hampton Inn & Suites Jekyll Island, and the historic Jekyll Island Club Resort. All three properties are the ultimate ‘rest & relaxation’ destination. The Westin Jekyll Island and the Hampton Inn & Suites Jekyll Island provide easy access to the beaches, wonderful poolside destinations, and tremendous views of the ocean, while the Jekyll Island Club Resort is one of the most historic structures on the island. The Jekyll Island Club Resort was built in the 1800’s to provide overnight accommodations for the rich and famous, such as: the Rockefeller’s, Morgan’s, Vanderbilt’s, and Pulitzer’s, all of whom frequently vacationed on Jekyll Island. The croquet courts located near the resort’s entrance are a popular outdoor recreation outlet, while The Wharf provides fresh, tasty, and delicious seafood selections, while overlooking the surrounding marshlands. The Pool House Jekyll Island: Georgia’s Grand Getaway Indiana Golf Journal

is another great dining option, while lounging poolside at the resort. When it comes to the ‘play’ part of your Jekyll Island adventure, the Jekyll Island Golf Club includes three 18-hole courses, Indian Mound, Oleander and Pine Lakes, plus the original ninehole layout, the Great Dunes. Indian Mound, constructed in 1975 by golf course designer Joe Lee, is the shortest of the three 18-hole courses with water impacting play on 11 of the 18 holes. The par fives provide more difficulty than their yardage indicates, and the short par four holes provide the best birdie opportunities. Oleander, which measures just more than 6,500 yards from the tips, has been the host course for the Georgia Open on four occasions. Designed by golf course architect Dick Wilson, Oleander is known as the most ‘distinct’ of the three 18-hole golf courses on Jekyll Island.

Pine Lakes, designed by Clyde Johnson, was first opened for play in 1968 andwas renovated in 2002. It meanders through forests and natural marsh hammocks. Golfers agree that Pine Lakes is peaceful, quiet, as well as, tranquil, yet a challenge for any skill level. Great Dunes was the first course on Jekyll Island and was built by Walter Travis. Asked to design and build the best golf course money could buy, Travis did just that. Work on the Great Dunes Course began in 1926 and it opened for play in 1928. It sits just a drive and wedge from the beach. When the seaside breezes pick up, the degree of difficulty of Great Dunes also increases. At one time the United States Golf Association used Great Dunes as a testing facility for clubs, shafts, and golf balls. After golf, enjoy a post-round drink or snack at McCormick’s Grill. It’s a welcome 19th hole! To book your visit to Jekyll Island, check out JekyllIsland.com or GeorgiaGolfandTravel.com. Don’t forget, ten miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches and 63 holes of golf await your arrival. Indiana Golf Journal

Beginner French: Cotes du Rhone Years ago, I lived in Arizona when I first started getting into wine. Back then, I had a friend who always brought Cotes du Rhone to any social gathering. What I recall was that Cotes du Rhone is not only a fruit-forward and complex red wine, but it was great to drink before, during, or after the meal. And in retrospect, that really is the hallmark of any great “goto,” or house wine. The Cotes du Rhone region is centered along the Rhone River By Kurt Wieneke occasions, Cotes du Rhone has other varietals such as Carignan or Cinsault included, but this depends on the producer. Grenache is themore voluptuous grape, giving lots of warmth and richness to the blend. It also has a hint of cotton candy on the nose which is usually a dead giveaway for me. Syrah is the workhorse grape in the blend, imparting depth and structure along with a meaty and peppery character. Mourvedre is the outsider, adding some in southern France between the towns of Vienne and Avignon. It’s a massive Mediterranean wine region. To put it in perspective, the Cotes du Rhone region is nearly five times larger than California’s Napa Valley in terms of vineyard area. Cotes du Rhone wine is traditionally a core blend of three different grape varietals: Grenache (60%), Syrah (30%), and Mourvedre (10%). The percentages can differ, but you get the point. On many

furry tannins to the texture and contributing mysterious flavors and aromas such as herbs or maybe even a hint of iodine. What I have always liked about Cotes du Rhone wines is that they are both simple and complex at the same time. By simple, I mean that they are very approachable and fruit-driven, usually not heavy on oak, and meant to drink at the table. The French even have a term for this called ‘Vin de Table’. Complexity comes by using different grape varietals in the blend, which gives different flavor characteristics to the wine. This makes a wine more interesting to smell and taste. It’s kind of like adding salt, pepper, spices, or herbs to your food. If you are new to Cotes du Rhone reds and would like to get acquainted, the following wines should be readily available at your local grocery or liquor store. Historically, most wagering in golf was accomplished on the course, between the competitors. Now, everyone can simply grab a phone, or laptop and lay down a bet without having to make that miraculous 20-footer for par to beat a fellow hacker. Betting online, or at a sportsbook site, is here to stay. You can opt to get on the bus or get run over by it. The PGA TOUR has embraced sports betting and has gone to great lengths to protect the integrity of their competitions. Beginners Guide for Betting On Golf By Ed Schmidt Jr. Here is a short primer for beginners and those who may be wondering if betting on golf is right for them. PGA TOUR Is Bullish on Betting The PGA TOUR is in love with fan engagement on social media and making money. Nothing says fan engagement better than putting a few bucks on the line. They have designated DraftKings as “TheOfficial BettingTour Operator of the PGA TOUR”. In addition, DraftKings is

the first “Official Daily Fantasy Game of the PGA TOUR”. After the Supreme Court’s repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act three years ago, the tour developed an integrity program in collaboration with Genius Sports to guard against competition corruption. The TOUR also has a global partnership with IMG ARENA to license its official, live scoring data to betting operators all over the world. There will be on-site betting, too. The PGA Tour and DraftKings have partnered to open a sportsbook on-site at TPC Scottsdale—site of the annual Waste Management Phoenix Open. Hey buddy, I’ll have two Bud Lights, plus put a C-Note on Jordan Spieth to birdie No. 16. This is going to make this wild tournament even wilder. Most Common Ways To Bet on Golf To Win: Who do you think will win the entire event? Typically, this bet is made as a futures wager before the start of the tournament. First Round Leader: If you want to up the anticipation factor for the beginning of an event, a bet on the first-round leader will get your juices flowing and make the first day of the tournament more exciting. Versus the Field: You’re wagering on a particular golfer and how they will perform against another group of players. Most of the time, the bet centers around one of the tourney favorites. Head-to-Head: Select who will post a lower score between golfers. Many sportsbooks offer multiple head-to-head matchups for the tour’s best and most well-known players. Indiana Golf Journal

Group Matchups: This is similar to head-tohead bets, but with group matchups you can bet on groups of three or four golfers of similar career performance. EachWay: Much like betting on someone to win an event, in each-way betting you can wager on a golfer to place in the top three, five, or 10. Prop Bets: Golf is tailor made for various prop bets. (A wager on an individual player or specific event.) One very popular prop bet is to select the best golfer (the one who will finish the highest) from each nationality in a specific tournament. Prop bets can take many different forms: Will the winner of the tournament be over or under 35? How many majors will a player win? The Masters always has some great prop bets such as: Who will be the top lefty finisher? Will there be a double eagle? What will be the winning margin? Will there be a bogey free round in the tournament? Betting Sites: You might know golf, but before you blindly start throwing your Ben Franklins around, you need to find a reliable, highly rated site with good odds on a wide variety of tournaments and events. Sports Betting Dime has compiled an exceptional list of the best golf betting sites and provided some extremely valuable insider tips on betting. If you’re a beginner, definitely hit up this post. Sports Betting Dime-Golf Betting Sites for 2021. States Where You Can Bet: Betting on golf online is easy if you live in one of the states that offers legal sports betting. Presently, about two dozen offer some form of legal sports betting and a couple of others will launch soon. Some of the bigger states include New Jersey, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Check out the Action Network, which has a comprehensive list of states that allow sports betting as well as projected legalization for other states. Good luck, Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!

Pete & PB Dye: Mirror Images of One Another Authentic,Genuine,Dedicated, andPassionate, those four words best describe the personal and professional life of the late World Golf Hallof-Fame course architect, Pete Dye. Sadly, the world lost Dye when he died two years ago, January 9, 2020 at the age of, 94. Fortunately, his legacy of work, of this longtime Hoosier resident, remains intact, thanks to the many golf courses, which he designed and redesigned over the years. Dye’s work as a golf course architect began in 1961 in his adopted home state of Indiana, when he and his wife Alice designed the Heather Hills (now, Maple Creek) Golf and Country Club in Indianapolis. If you never had a chance to meet Dye, a great way to learn about this golf visionary is to ask anybody who knew him and worked with him. Besides his wife Alice, the one person who worked longer with Pete was his son PB and he had the highest respect for his father. “My dad put a shovel in my hand at seven, I was driving a tractor at eight, I was operating a bulldozer at age nine and a backhoe at ten,” recalled PB, which is short for Paul Burke. By Mike May Indiana Golf Journal

According to PB, now in his mid-60s, one of the reasons why he worked so long with his father is because they had similar mindsets. “The apple doesn’t fall far fromthe tree,”admitted PB. “Our philosophies are quite parallel. I had a great teacher for a long, long time. I remember every topographical map that I looked at with my dad.” PB and his brother Perry were raised with oldfashioned, traditional values. PB and Perry worked for everything they had and earned every dollar they made. “We were raised as workers and not as the boss’s kid,” noted PB. “My dad was a ditch digger and not an architect.” PB considers himself to be a ditch digger, too and he enjoyed the ditch-digging journey with his dad. “We had a lot of fun building golf courses,” added PB. PB also learned that the commitment necessary to build a great golf course is similar to what it takes to raise children. “The more you are there, the better they turn out,” said PB. Clearly, Pete Dye was a hands-on golf course designer and father, succeeding at both. PB is also quick to comment on the important role that his mother, Alice, played in the Dye family. “Mom and Dad were a great team,” said PB. “They helped a lot of people. Mom was also a great golfer as she won more than 50 amateur titles. She won everything but the U.S. Women’s Amateur.” Of all the many golf courses that PB and Pete worked together on, he distinctly remembers the last one -- The Golf Club in New Albany, Ohio when Pete was in his mid-80s. “Looking back, that was probably Dad’s first year with Alzheimer’s.”

Another great memory of PB’s was designing and building the Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Pete designed the course alongside Jack Nicklaus, who served as the golf course consultant. Pete had known Nicklaus for years, as the two families had a connection. Pete’s father, Paul Francis Dye, used to play golf with Nicklaus’ father, Charlie. “We started at Harbour Town in September of 1968 and on Thanksgiving morning in 1969, they played the first PGA Tour tournament there,” remembered PB. “On the morning of that opening round on Thanksgiving Day, I was putting sod above the bunker next to the 18th green when they were teeing off the 10th.” Four days later, Arnold Palmer came walking down the tournament’s 72nd hole with a onestroke lead. Palmer pulled his approach left of the 18th green. It finished in an oyster bed at low tide. Palmer found his ball, chipped it to 15 feet and then made the tournament-winning putt. “Afterwards, Palmer publicly thanked Pete Dye for designing such a great golf course,” said PB. “Thank goodness that it was low tide and Palmer found his ball.” That endorsement helped launch Pete Dye’s career which can best be described as authentic, truly genuine, extremely dedicated, and quite passionate. Pete Dye learned his craft building courses in Indiana and is a true son of the Hoosier State. Indiana Golf Journal

Indiana Golf ’s 2022 Junior Schedule One of the major focal points of emphasis for Indiana Golf is junior golf. For Indiana’s junior golfers, there will be a multitude of competitive tournament-playing opportunities in 2022. The Howard Bailey Junior Golf Tour features more than 50 tournaments that begin on April 9-10 with the Covered Bridge Junior Spring Series, held at Fuzzy Zoeller’s Covered Bridge Golf Club in Sellersburg. The final event of the year will also be played in southern Indiana, on October 22-23 at the Champions Pointe Golf Club in Henryville. With this being January, now is a good time to give you a sneak preview of three of the major tournament destinations on the Howard Bailey Junior Golf Tour. In some small way, this will give the players an idea of what to expect when they step foot on the first tee at these great venues. Girls-Indiana Junior PGA Championship On June 6-7, the Girls-Indiana Junior PGA Championship will be held at the Plum Creek Golf Club in Carmel. By Mike May

Plum Creek is an impressive 18-hole championship layout, but the golf course truly comes to life on the back nine. From the 10th tee to the 18th green, golfers will find water on six holes. The back nine also features five creatively designed doglegs, plus the two par threes, the 11th and 16th, are terrific one-shot opportunities. These two holes rival any par three’s in Indiana. Boys-Indiana Junior PGA Championship From July 14-15, the Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru will host the Boys-Indiana Junior PGA Championship. Rock Hollow has a ‘lamb-and-lion’ aspect to its opening and closing holes. It opens like a mild lamb with a short par-four first hole, only 296 yards from the back tees. Rock Hollow closes like a ferocious lion as the 18th hole is a lengthy par four, which has a lake that borders the left side of the hole from tee to the green. Water is also a major factor at both the 7th and 8th holes. Water actually impacts play on 10 of the 18 holes. Hoosier Junior Championship On October 8-9, the Hoosier Junior Championship will be held at the Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus. This is a 27-hole venue with the North, West and East Courses. Otter Creek will reward you with the chance of a good score if you are accurate off the tee. There are no funny bounces or bad hops at Otter Creek, which increases this course’s level of fairness. There are few blind shots at Otter Creek, golfers are able to have a good idea of how every hole should play, when standing on the tee. As Old ManWinter settles in, it’s time for golfers to get in shape for the 2022 golf season. Put down that piece of pumpkin pie, now is the time to work on stretching, strength, and flexibility, so you can be more like Bryson! It’s much easier than you think to incorporate exercise and fitness into your daily life, at home, or at the office, without spending hundreds of dollars for a fitness club membership. Check out these ten ‘deskercizes,’ created by Cedric X. Bryant, Chief Science Officer for the American Council on Exercise, and John Porcari, Get FitatHome, orat theOffice ‘DESKERCIZE:’ By Mike May Executive Director, La Crosse Exercise and Health Program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. They can transform your life into a fun, fitness frenzy, plus they are perfect to keep you fit and flexible throughout the year. 1) Paper Pushups – With your arms outstretched while grabbing the edge of your desk, lean at 45 degrees, and do pushups. Start out slow. Just do four-five reps and build up to more as you are able. 2) Book Press – Pick up the heaviest book that you can hold with both hands. Extend Indiana Golf Journal

it above your head and lower it behind your neck. Repeat the process. This easy exercise increases tricep strength and firms those saggy muscles at the back of your arms 3) Shoulder Blade Squeezes – To improve your hunched posture, stand up and squeeze your shoulder blades back and forth. Hold the squeeze on your shoulder blades for 10 seconds. Keep doing this and build up to a set of ten. 4) Office Yoga – Keep a yoga matt at the office and lay it out on the floor for some impromptu stretching. There are a multitude of easy yoga poses for beginners online. Start slow and build up. You’ll be doing the Downward Dog in no time.

5) Chair Squats – Stand a few inches from the edge of your chair, lower yourself until you are seated in your chair, stretch out your arms parallel to the ground, and keep your back straight. This will help ease those lower back issues you incur from long hours hunched over at your desk 6) Tricep Desk Dips – With your back to a desk, reach back and grab the edge of the desk. Then, bend your arms and lower the body, while putting tension on your triceps. Be careful the first few times you do this. It seems simple, but once you get down, you have to be able to get back up. 7) Wall Sits – Stand next to a wall and lower your back along the wall until your legs are parallel to the floor. Hold that position, then have your back move up the wall to the original position. 8) Standing Calf Raises – While grabbing the back of your chair, put your feet together, and get up on your tippy toes. Hold this position for 10 seconds and repeat. This will strengthen those calf muscles and enhance those sexy calves when you wear your high heels. 9) Leg Raises – While sitting in a chair with your back straight, extend each leg, individually, holding that pose with the leg parallel to the floor for 10 seconds. Believe it or not, this is very good to tighten and strengthen your abs, which also helps reduce pressure on your lower back. 10) Phone Pacing – While making those big deals on the telephone, use a headset and walk around your office, rather than just sit in a chair. This little bit of cardio gets your heart pumping blood to your lower extremities, and you will see an increase in your focus, as well. Get fit and ready to hit it ‘Bubba Long,’ in 2022. Use these simple ‘deskercizes’ and be ready to hit the first tee when warmer weather finally gets here. Try ‘Deskercizes’ -- just for the health of it. Indiana Golf Journal
