John Powers Named Head Men’s Golf Coach at BGSU

John Powers, the new BGSU Men’s Golf Coach, is a Bowling Green alum, as well as, a former member of the Falcon’s golf team (2006-2010). He has very close ties to the area and is excited to be returning to his alma mater. In 123 collegiate events, he maintained a 75.2 scoring average, finished inside the top-15 in 10 events and won the 2007 University of Dayton Spring Invitational.

Bob Moosbrugger, Director of Athletics at BGSU said,

“We are thrilled to welcome John back to his alma mater as the head coach for BGSU men’s golf. John’s experience as a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach, combined with his deep ties to the Bowling Green community will serve our golf program well. John is committed to student-athlete’s academic, as well as, their athletic success, which will enable us to continue building an excellent men’s golf program.”

Powers also competed in national tournaments, placing 15th in the 2005 U.S. Junior Amateur held at Longmeadow Country Club in Massachusetts and qualified for both the 2005 and 2007 U.S. Public Links Championships.

Powers graduated from BGSU with a degree in sport management and completed requirements for a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications at St. Bonaventure, while the Head Coach of men’s golf team.

Powers spent a couple of years as coach and caddie for his sister Caroline Powers on the Symetra Tour, who is now an assistant coach for the Michigan State University Women’s Golf Team.

John spent the last two years as Head Coach of the Women’s Team and Assistant Men’s Golf Coach at Cleveland State University.

Cleveland State Head Coach, Steve Weir said of his former assistant,

“John has been tremendous for our program and we wouldn’t have had the success we’ve had without him. We are excited for him to ‘go home’ to lead the team that he has loved for so long.”

Former BGSU Men’s Golf Coach, Kevin Farrell left BGSU in November to become the men’s golf coach at his alma mater, Mount St. Marys.

Farrell coached five All-MAC golfers, while at BGSU. During the 2015-16 season the Falcon men’s golf team posted the lowest 18-hole score in history and the second-lowest 54-hole total.

Powers is inheriting an experienced team with two seniors, four juniors, a lone sophomore and two freshmen.

He said,

“I am excited to come back to Bowling Green. The university and community believe in their student-athletes. We want to build a program they will be proud of. Having been a Falcon and member of the golf team, it is indeed an honor for me. Bowling Green is a special place.”

The Falcons open their spring schedule in March at the Border Olympics, hosted by the University of Houston at Laredo Country Club. In April they will compete in the Greenbrier Invitational, the Robert Kepler Invitational at Ohio State and the MAC Championship to be held at Sycamore Hills in Fort Wayne.
