In a repeat from last season, the second Senior LPGA Championship presented by Old National Bank will be held on the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort in southern Indiana. Last year the tournament was held in June, in conjunction with the Symetra Tour’s Donald Ross Classic. This year, the Legends Tour ladies will have the spotlight all to themselves, with an October 15-17 date.
The Legends Tour showcases the talents of former LPGA Tour professionals over the age of 45 and represent some of the most talented female golfers in the history of the game. The tour boasts a roster of female players that have combined for nearly 750 wins on the LPGA Tour, including over 80 major championships. Fourteen LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famers compete on The Legends Tour, plus nine have served as Solheim Cup captains, with dozens more have played in the Solheim Cup.
The Legends Tour also raises significant funds for local charities, with over $18 million generated. The Senior LPGA Championship is no exception, funds generated from the event will benefit The Riley Children’s Hospital, the premier children’s hospital in the region.
The Dye Course sits high atop the second highest peak in Indiana and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding country side. It has also hosted several big-time events. Within one year after the course opened for play in 2009, the PGA of America hosted the 2010 PGA Professional National Championship. The Champions Tour held the 2015 Senior PGA Championship on the Dye Course, won by Colin Montgomerie and the BIG Ten has hosted its conference championship on the Dye Course, as well.
Trish Johnson, from England, won here last year with a three-round score of four-under-par. Michele Redman finished three shots behind, for solo runner-up. Helen Alfredsson, Laura Davies and Wendy Doolan, all tied for third.
Davies may be the favorite again in October, as she is coming off a win at the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open hosted by the USGA at Chicago Golf Club earlier this year.
Juli Inkster will also be in the field and is always a threat to win on the Legends Tour. She looks forward to competing in the Senior LPGA Championship and said,
“It’s a great opportunity for the Legends Tour players to compete and play a first-class golf course. We all look forward to the event and can’t wait until October. Dave Harner and his people do an amazing job setting up the tournament. I’m sure, once again, it will be a first-class tournament.”
In all a field of 81 players will compete over 54 holes for a total purse of $600,000. If you can’t make it to French Lick, all three rounds will be televised on Golf Channel from 4:00-6:00 PM ET.
