Jimmy Dee Dowsett is a veteran of the United States Air Force and was a former member of the Asian Golf Tour in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but his world and ambitions changed 19 years ago, when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Dowsett, from Clarkston, Michigan, came home from Thailand, after finding out his sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, but then suddenly another health scare came his way.

“Three days after I had gotten off of the plane from Thailand, I couldn’t see out of my right eye,” he said. “I went into an eye doctor, who diagnosed me with MS.”

MS disables the central nervous system and makes it difficult for the afflicted to have total use and control of their body.

Dowsett’s mission became less about his golf career and more about the golf career of others battling the same disease. He formed “Moving Day for MS,” an initiative where golfers at golf Tours around the world wear orange, the official color of MS awareness, on “Moving Day,” either Saturday or Sunday, to promote MS.

“Many of my friends still play golf on tours all around the world,” said Dowsett, who qualified for the Asian Tour in the late 90’s, while serving in the Air Force in Japan.

He is also very active in the United States Adaptive Golf Alliance that holds several golf tournaments across the country for golfers with physical disabilities.

Going forward, Dowsett also has another initiative. While golf is now a sport in the Summer Olympics, it hasn’t been instituted as a sport in the Paralympics. Using his connections in Japan, from his days as a professional golfer, and the fact he speaks fluent Japanese, he, along with the USAGA, are trying to organize a para-golf event for the Paralympics that will be held in Tokyo next year.

Dowsett told us his ultimate goal,   “I want to help everyone get back on the golf course.”

Golfers can also support the “Moving Day for MS” initiative by purchasing golf gloves adorned the colorful logo. Funds from the sale go to support the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. Jimmy Dowsett has had a life-long love affair with golf and is not allowing the debilitating MS to slow him down. He still works on his game, competes when he can and is constantly promoting adaptive golf to help fund a cure Multiple Sclerosis.
