PGA Village Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida has three outstanding golf courses to make any golf getaway a treat.
The Ryder and Wanamaker courses were designed by Tom Fazio and underwent extensive renovations within the last six years.
The Ryder plays slightly easier off the tee, but beautiful bunkering frames every fairway and green. The renovation of the Ryder Course was completed in 2018 and it is now fully grown in and a joy to play.
The Wanamaker course is slightly more challenging off the tee, with every hole lined with bunkering and strategic placement of water hazards. Undulating greens make three-putts a concern on every green.
The Pete Dye Course at PGA Village is in a class all to itself. Even though the course has limited elevation change, the tees are raised, and the fairways are wide enough to accept slightly off-line tee shots. The bunkering on the Dye Couse is artistic and deadly. Deep bunkers protect nearly every green and many of the fairway bunkers will not allow approach shots to the green. Word to the wise, take your medicine and get the ball out to a more manageable third shot.
The greens are not huge, but constant undulation and movement do not allow for many straight putts. Three and four putts are always lurking and the short game, chipping and putting, is what will destroy your handicap.
The renovation of the Dye Course by Head Superintendent Dick Gray was masterful. For my money, the Dye Course at PGA Village is one of the very best in Florida.
While playing the Dye Course take a look at the bee hives beside the 9th green. The resort is making a concerted effort to add more bees to the property and will begin selling Dye’s Select No. 9 honey.
Wild flowers, Azaleas and more bee hives will soon be added to all three courses to bring a more pleasing aesthetic and soothe frayed nerves, while making bogey, double or worse.
Gray and his crew have done such a superb job of renovating and upgrading the courses at PGA Village that the PGA of America recently announced the 2021 PGA Professional National Championship would be held on the Ryder and Wanamaker courses.
Another new program introduced at PGA Village this year is Express Check-In. Head Professional Holly Taylor told us,
“Express check-in allows our members and guests to go right to the tee. It speeds up the first tee process and makes the overall golf experience more enjoyable.”
After your round, stop in the clubhouse to view the collection of PGA Championship and Ryder Cup memorabilia on display. Be sure to take a selfie beside the Wanamaker and Ryder Cup Trophies.
