She is one of 11 outstanding high school graduates, who will receive a Marilynn Smith Scholarship from the LPGA Foundation. The $5,000 scholarship is named in honor of one of the LPGA’s 13 Founders and awarded to high school graduates, who plan to play golf at an accredited college, or university in the United States. Cybill was the Senior Class President, served on the Fundraising/Marketing Committee for the National Honor Society, was a member of her school’s varsity volleyball team and a threetime captain of the varsity golf team. She was honored with the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award, set the low score record during the 2021 IHSAA state golf tournament last fall, and became the second player in Northern Lakes Conference history to be the conference tournament individual medalist all four years of high school. This coming fall, Cybillwill playNCAA Division I golf for Butler University and major in journalism with a sports media focus. After college, she plans to play on the EpsonTour, with dreams to become a major champion on the LPGA Tour, just like Marilynn Smith. Can a Golf Shoe actually help you Play Better Golf? Golf shoes should allow for limited slippage and provide stable contact with the ground, but also have structure to permit adequate movement for correct weight distribution. Today’s lightweight – sneaker like shoes cannot hold up to the weight shifts and forces created during the swing. To create distance and balance during the swing, you need to use the ground and your only connection to the ground is your golf shoe. Sam Roberts: An Ace in Golf and in Life By Indiana Golf Indiana Golf Journal
Sam Roberts was hesitant to join the First Tee of Indiana program in middle school. Already an avid golfer and former Gongaware Academy participant, Sam assumed First Tee was for just for beginners. At his parents’ urging, Sam reluctantly attended his first class. “Sam had a preconceived notion that First Tee was for younger children who did not have any golf experience,” said Sam’s dad, Aaron Roberts. “But after his first class, he was hooked. He truly enjoyed how the program was structured and taught along with the one-on-one instruction.” Sam was excited to learn that the program offered various levels for golfers to advance through to achieve Ace status, the ultimate goal. It is the highest level offered by the program but had not been achieved by any participant in Indiana. This was a goal Sam knew he could reach, and nothing was going to stop him. “I knew I wanted to do my best and be the best. As you work through each level of PLAYer, Par, Birdie, Eagle and Ace, it begins to fit together. Once you get to the Ace level, you finally see that all of the work you’ve been doing has a framework and it has led you to this point.” First Tee exists to help kids build the strength of character by integrating the game of golf with a life skills curriculum. First Tee creates learning experiences that build inner strength, selfconfidence, and resilience that kids can carry throughout their lives. Sam’s parents, as well as his coaches, saw Sam’s confidence grow and his work ethic far exceeded that of just golf skills. “First Tee afforded Sam many opportunities for personal growth, including in areas such as public speaking, confidence and building relationships,” said Aaron. “As parents, watching your child flourish doing what they love is priceless.” Sam also succeeded academically and was valedictorian of his Centerville High School class, before attending Indiana East University in the fall of 2020. “Sam’s human traits reflect the Nine Core Values in his academics, family, religion, and work life,” said coach, Bob Van Pelt. “He has become a tremendous public speaker, actor, collegiate golfer, and an active member in his church. He’s exceptional.” Sam spent roughly eight years advancing through all skill levels, including the final two years dedicated to achieving Ace Level status. The Ace Level focuses on personal planning and reinforces skills such as self-management, goal setting, self-coaching, interpersonal communication, and resilience that were applied in earlier levels of the program. Using these skills, participants become Ace-certified by completing four projects that will help
them build a foundation in higher education and into their career. Project topics include Community Service, Career, College, and Golf. “Ace teaches you to work through your thoughts and mindsets while playing a round of golf, your physicality, and your plans for the future with college and job opportunities,” said Sam. “For one of my projects, I had to interview three local businesspeople and I formed meaningful connections with them that I still have today.” Indiana in Richmond, alongside his former coaches, Bob Van Pelt and Sam Witherby. Sam’s favorite part about coaching has been seeing his players continuously improve. “I’ve had beginner students who couldn’t make contact when they first joined the program. By the end of the summer, they could hit their driver 75 yards consistently. It’s been awesome to see them improve on the golf course and become even better people.” Today, Sam continues to coach at First Tee of Indiana in Richmond, while also attending Indiana University East, plus compete on their men’s golf team. He has been a member of the Dean’s List every semester and was the 2020 recipient of the Male Lingle Scholar Award for outstanding freshman. “To say we are proud of Sam is an understatement,” said Sam’s father, Aaron. “Sam makes us proud everyday just by being himself. His hard work gaining the Ace Level Status showed us his responsibility, work ethic and tenacity. Whatever Sam involves himself in, he gives 100 percent, and he never gives up. Brickyard Crossing: The Confluence of Golf & Auto Racing By Mike May Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines, er your golf carts! That is an appropriate message for all golfers that play the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis – especially in May, when the annual Indianapolis 500 is contested. This 18-hole championship golf course is named in honor of its more famous sporting neighbor, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which also hosts NASCAR’s Verizon 200 at the Brickyard on July 31. This golf course -- a Pete Dye re-design – is a true blend of golf and motor sports as it sits in the shadows of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. The Brickyard Crossing Golf Course has 14 holes on the outskirts of the Speedway and four holes located within the infield of the Racing Capital of the World. Those four golf holes are a hop, skip, and a jump away from Gasoline Alley. To reach those four holes, you must drive your golf
cart through a tunnel under the actual racetrack. To add to the authenticity of the experience, each flag on every pin is a black-and-white checkered flag with the logo of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway sewn across the flag. When you play Brickyard Crossing, you get 18 checkered-flag experiences. Everybody is a winner at Brickyard Crossing! The four holes inside the infield are the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth holes. As you would expect, since you make the turn inside the Speedway, the snack shop near the 10th tee is called “The Pit Stop.” “As a race fan and a golfer, I still get goose bumps when I pull into the parking lot,” said Curt Schmidt of Indianapolis. The 7th, the first hole inside the Speedway’s infield, is a par three, played from a perched tee to a raised green, which provides a 360-degree view of the Speedway. On the 18th hole, a historic barn, a tribute to Indiana’s strong agricultural roots, sits in the distance and becomes your target off the tee. Brickyard Crossing is one of the few golf courses to host tournaments on the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and a Champions Tour. Make plans to play the Brickyard and enjoy 18 checkered flag experiences but avoid the temptation of visiting Gasoline Alley. No golf carts are allowed! “It’s a great golf course, from beginning to end,” says Kurt Wieneke of Indianapolis. “Those four holes in the infield are well-designed. They will excite and energize any golfer. If you like golf and racing, it’s a pilgrimage that you must make.” As you play holes 1-6 and 1118, the Speedway’s grandstands are always lurking in the background, but they never impact play. U.S. Open Preview Brooks Koepka: Ready to Win Again By Mike May When the world’s top golfers gather in Brookline, Massachusetts to play in the 2022 U.S. Open, there will only be a few players in the field who are former U.S. Open champions. Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Martin Kaymer, Gary Woodland, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Webb Simpson, and defending champion Jon Rahm will be looking for another U.S. Open Trophy. Past champions, Lucas Glover (2009) and Graeme McDowell (2010) will have to qualify to make the 2022 field. Woods and Koepka will be the only players in the field who have won multiple U.S. Open titles. Woods is a three-time champ (2000, 2002, and 2008), while Koepka has won the U.S Open Championship Trophy on two occasions (2017 and 2018). Koepka also has the distinction of being one of only three men to have won it consecutively. The other two are Americans Curtis Strange (1988-1989) and Willie Anderson (1903-1905). Anderson actually won four U.S. Open titles, with the first title coming in 1901. Indiana Golf Journal
Koepka’s attempt to join Anderson’s three-peat fell short when he finished runner-up to Gary Woodland in the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Koepka also won back-toback PGA Championships in 2018 and 2019. With his victory in the 2018 PGA, he became just the fifth golfer to win the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship in the same calendar year. The other four people on that exclusive list are, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Woods. While Woods’ background growing up in southern California is well publicized, Koepka’s background is not so well known. Keopka is the by-product of a junior golf program at Okeeheelee Golf Course, a county owned public golf course in suburban West Palm Beach, Florida. Keopka spent countless hours as a youngster hitting balls on the driving range, practicing bunker play, stroking putts on the practice putting green, and splitting the fairways with big drives. was three until I got him his first junior set of clubs at age seven to play in a tournament at Okeeheelee. He liked golf at an early age and from age 7-12, he started showing a passion for the game, especially after I took him to the Masters at age eight. He played a lot of sports growing up like soccer, roller hockey, basketball and, mostly, baseball, until deciding at 12 he wanted to focus strictly on golf. I knew he was always a good player, but never once dreamed of him reaching the heights of winning majors and becoming one of the top golfers in the world!” Brooks’ high school golf coach, Greg Sherman, is not surprised to see Brooks succeeding on the PGA Tour. “I had the privilege and honor of coaching many fine golfers and many fine young men during my ten plus years of coaching the golf team at Cardinal Newman High School (in West Palm Beach). There were several that stood out as outstanding golfers Brooks’ memories of his time at Okeeheelee are vivid. “Growing up at Okeeheelee was a blast! We would get dropped off at 7:30 every morning and get picked up at dark. I learned how to play the game there and it will always hold a special place in my heart.” He was joined at Okeeheelee by his younger brother, Chase, also a professional golfer, currently competing on the Korn Ferry Tour. Much of the credit for Brooks’ initial interest in golf must be given to his father, Bob, himself a single handicap golfer, who first put a club in his son’s hands. “Brooks hit some of my cutdown clubs from the time he

I can’t really say why Brooks stood out among them, but he did.” Golf professionals Mary-Lee Cobick and Donna White have strong memories of young Brooks playing at Okeeheelee. “He had a passion for golf and his work ethic stood out,” recalled White. “He loved to compete, and he played lots of golf at Okeeheelee. He and his brother would play, play, play all day. He was always a serious player.” “Brooks was the young man you saw arrive first in the morning and was the last to leave at night,” remembered Cobick. “Brooks played and worked on his short game all was playing cards or sports,” added Bob Koepka. “It was up to them to either physically or mentally rise up to the challenge.” Brooks Koepka has certainly risen to many golf challenges in the most-recent past. Don’t be surprised to see him win a third U.S. Open title at The Country Club in June. With a third U.S. Open win, he would join a very exclusive club. Only Anderson, Bobby Jones, Hogan, Nicklaus, Hale Irwin and Woods have won three U.S. Opens. day long. People talk about his power, but his short game and putting are incredible! He was so competitive and always wanted to ‘play a game’ against anyone and everyone that would be around the clubhouse. It always amazes me now to watch him ‘pull off’ all the difficult shots around the green in tournaments in the last final holes. It’s as if I’m watching him all over again from the Okeeheelee Golf shop window years ago.” Bob Koepka also taught his two sons that winning at anything doesn’t just happen. It requires focus and determination. “I always made the boys figure out how to win at anything and never let them win whether it Indiana Golf Journal
Senior PGA Championship Returns to Benton Harbor The Senior PGA Championship will celebrate the 82nd edition at the Golf Club at Harbor Shores, in Benton Harbor, May 25-29. The first Senior PGA Championship was held at Augusta National Golf Club in 1937. Now, as then, it recognizes the best professional golfer over the age of 50. Alex Chejka is the reigning Senior PGA Champion as he won last year at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Chejka recorded his best month ever as a professional golfer when he won the Tradition on May 9 and finished the month by winning the Senior PGA Championship. His first two wins on the Champions Tour were majors times and when Jack Nicklaus was contracted to design a unique golf test. It has brought an economic rebirth to the area. Kerry Wright, Harbor Shores’ director of real estate sales, described the unlikely chain of events that brought Mr. Nicklaus to Michigan. “Whirlpool’s nonprofit division saw this land on the water that it wanted to transform. It was the idea of the company’s and quickly established him as a force on the senior circuit. When the company began marketing their clubs in 2014 every club was required to be professionally fitted to the individual. Plus, a full set of clubs cost upwards of $5,000.00. For the company to grow some things had to change. That pricing and commitment for the average weekend warrior golfer was not sustainable. Daytona Beach: A ‘Hot-Bed’ of Racing & Golf By Chris King In many respects, Daytona Beach, Florida and Indianapolis, Indiana are polar opposites, yet both cities have two things in common – motor racing and golf. Both cities consider themselves as the ‘heartbeat’ of automotive racing and rightfully so. Indianapolis is known as the Racing Capital of the World and Daytona Beach is known as the World Center of Racing. Racing is king in Indianapolis in May, for the Indy 500, while the Daytona 500 takes precedent each February. Both cities are proud of their racing heritage, plus both have a long tradition of being top-flight golf destinations. For golfers in the Midwest who enjoy making the trek to Florida for the running of the Daytona 500 – aka, the Great American Race – in February, there are a number of strong, must-play golf courses. • LPGA International: This 36-hole property is Daytona Beach’s most acclaimed facility. By Franciscan Health Whether you’re a habitual knuckle-cracker or your joints pop on their own accord, it’s important to know what’s causing your joints to make noise and when to be alarmed. “It’s normal for joints to make cracking and popping sounds from time to time,” says Michael Kralovec, MD, orthopedic surgeon and clinical director of the Franciscan Health Center for Joint Surgery Munster. “It’s nothing to be concerned about if it’s not painful.” However, if your noisy joints cause a burst of pain each time they crack or pop, it’s time to talk with a doctor. Dull aching after joint pops can also mean that something is wrong. What Causes Painful Noisy Joints? Knuckles, ankles, knees, hips and shoulder joints can occasionally be noisy. It can happen whether you’re waking up, working out, or even stretching as you stand up. Naturaloccurring nitrogen gas bubbles in your joints that pop can cause a loud cracking noise. When your joints pop or crack with accompanying pain, arthritis is the most common cause. Arthritis is a condition in which the cartilage covering the ends of the bones begins to wear away, exposing the bare bone underneath the cartilage. The bare bone causes a painful grinding sensation and can even lead to “bone-on-bone” degeneration. According to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, almost 25 percent of all adults in the U.S. – roughly 58.5 million people - have arthritis. A Day at the Masters, A Memory Forever By Mike May My first-ever (and, hopefully, not final) trip to a competitive round at The Masters Tournament happened this year and I have several indelible memories from the experience. I was joined for Thursday’s opening round, by my brother, Charles, my son Trevor, and my daughter-in-law, Hannah. The gates officially open at 8:00 am, but I was stunned by the number of cars already in the parking lot at 7:45. The process of finding a spot was seamless, efficient and well-coordinated. The skies were overcast with a light the food on property. The service is efficient and impeccable, plus there was never a line to select, or pay for your food. Of course, I had to have the famous pimento cheese and egg salad sandwiches. No cell phones are allowed on the golf course, I had left my phone in my car, but AT&T did provide two banks of telephones where patrons were encouraged to make complimentary longdistance phone calls to anybody in the country. I placed a call to my mother, just to say hello. The Augusta National Golf Club has plenty of permanent restroom facilities on the golf course for both men and women. I never had to wait in line and each stall is quickly cleaned after every visit. I have never seen so many people following a player at a golf tournament as the thousands of patrons following Tiger Woods. He didn’t disappoint his followers as he shot a oneunder-par round of 71 on that first day. We also followed Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, drizzle, but that didn’t detract from our excitement. We were too late to watch the ceremonial tee shots from Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, but looked forward to the spectacular views, great shots and attention-grabbing roars. Entering through the gates was an experience. With rows of body scanners, it resembled airport security, but mixed with Southern hospitality. Patrons are always surprised about the quality and low cost of Indiana Golf Journal
and Matthew Fitzpatrick. I was introduced to Rory’s parents and had a chance to speak with past Masters champion, Sandy Lyle, while he was standing on the 9th tee. I asked him about the Champions Dinner meal. After he answered my question, he hammered a drive down the middle of the fairway. Patrons never run, everyone walks. There were many Augusta National members wearing their traditional green jackets around the course. I took the opportunity to thank them for staging a wonderful event and they always replied with a nod. It was dark at the conclusion of our day at the Masters, as we were some of the last patrons to leave. Maintenance crews and mowers with headlights beaming were prepping the golf course for day two. We didn’t want to leave and cannot wait to return. If you are a golf fan and have never been to the Masters, it is truly a day you will remember forever. Everyone deserves a day to bask in the beauty and tradition of the Masters.
